Our Story
In the early 1960’s two Lutheran churches decided that the best way to follow Christ in their common neighborhood was to merge and become a single Lutheran church. They bought “Tiny Dumont’s Dance Hall” at S.E. Market and 117th in Portland and began to worship together. They chose the name “Gethsemane Lutheran Church” and began to make plans for a sanctuary and an office building. In the late 1960’s the new buildings were finished and dedicated.
Ministry has continued in the following years. Over time Gethsemane has become known for its Preschool, its Choir, and for its ministry to the homeless and the hungry. Today it looks forward to finding more ways of ministering to its neighborhood and to the people of its community.
